4 Ways To Prevent Anti-Aging

I often get asked about my skincare routine. What products do I use? Is it better to get microdermabrasion or micro-needling? Do I eat certain foods or drink tons of water? How do I get rid of my fine lines? Who is my skincare doctor?

These are just a few of the many questions I've been asked over the course of my blogging career, and although it's easy to answer these questions but it takes commitment to keep up with regular appointments, invest in quality products, and stay active and healthy.

I'm giving you the 4 tips I swear by for keeping healthy and glowing skin.

1. Quality Products

This one might sound totally obvious but it's actually the most commonly misconstrued. I'm here to tell you that high priced products don't always mean better. I, myself, made this mistake. For years I bought a very expensive brand name face wash and night cream. I blew well over $200 on my night cream and roughly $100 on face wash. I thought since it was a well known, expensive brand, it must be good! Turns out, just because the brand has phenomenal handbags and clothing doesn't necessarily mean their skincare products are going to be just as good. Of course, there are many products still totally worth the invest; it's just a matter of finding the right ones.

I always look for nutrient-rich ingredients, loaded with vitamins and minerals, and I typically find reviews of friend's helpful as well. Products like Creme de La Mer night cream, SkinCeuticals Vitamin C serum, and Elizabeth Arden anti aging creams are 100% worth the investment. Other products like face wash, which naturally don't carry as many nutrients, can be sourced on a more budget-friendly level. There's no reason for you to spend $100 on super brand-name products, when the same ingredients are in Neutrogena face wash for $10.99.

2. Facials

I've been getting facials since I hit puberty. Okay, not quite, but close to. I think they're such an important part of keeping your skin clear and free of any signs of aging. I'm always excited to try out new procedures and learn more about the latest technologies of new beauty. 

A few weeks ago I received a Vampire facial treatment done by External Affairs Medical Spa. To be honest, I've been curious ever since I saw Kim Kardashian get one done. This is where you have your blood drawn, which is then put into a centrifuge machine to separate the plasma from the red and white blood cells. The concentrated plasma, which is rich in platelets {the part of the blood rich with growth factors} is then micro-needled throughout the face. Needless to say, the procedure is not for the faint of heart. 

Although it sounds intense, and quite frankly, is intense, the facial itself is mild in terms of the pain factor. The down time is quite minimal and the full results are seen within 2{ish} weeks. Of course, the first few days pink/ redness and extreme tightening is normal. The overall process lasts roughly an hour to an hour in a half, and since you're having a fair amount of blood taken make sure to eat and drink plenty of water before hand. I found that the blood being drawn was the most uncomfortable part {since I'm a big baby when it comes to that} but the rest was easy peasy; it especially helps with the numbing. Not going to lie though, I freaked out a little when I got home and saw my face. Your face is very raw because, essentially, the first layer of your skin is removed and the micro-needled plasma is enriched in your skin. I've found that the results vary, but in my experience a tighter overall appearance and fine line reduction is definite. There was absolutely zero acne, blackheads, or enlarged pores once my face healed. While this facial is great for keeping up with younger looking skin, the upkeep is vital. Similar to upkeep with any facials, really.

Nonetheless, facials should be an important part of your monthly skincare routine.

3. Fillers

Normally I find that it's taboo to talk about receiving fillers however, I pride myself on being very open and honest with my readers, and I believe everyone deserves to know the truth so they can have all the information and decide what's best for them. In my opinion, fillers are a part of keeping the skin looking young. Botox is to  prevent any fine lines and wrinkles, while fillers such as Restylane and Juvéderm are to fill any fine lines and wrinkles. I understand everyone is different and some are against fillers, but I personally feel as long as fillers are done in a natural way, they can really help. I've seen lots of people go overboard with fillers, and I can see why, it's a very easy slippery slope; however, the important thing to remember is everything in moderation.

4. SPF

Above all, SPF is the best way to keep your skin from aging. Without it, your skin will 100% lose it's elasticity and increase in fine lines, and fast. I'm a huge advocate of wearing a daily SPF face cream, I use Neutrogena's Ultra Sheer. My family has a history of skin cancer so I've been warned from a very young age to wear sunblock. Of course, when you're a tween/teen you never listen to your parents. Although I've made it a daily part of my routine for a few years now, I truly wish I started even earlier. I know having a tan during summer is sexy and makes a girl feel great but spray tans and self tanners can get you the same tan, or even get you even darker than your natural color. If you take away anything from this blog post full of rich content, let SPF be at the top of your list.
